Enjoy Full HD1080p Blu-ray Disc movies plus connect to the
internet and stream a wide variety of online entertainment including
movies, TV episodes, videos, music, and live sports from Netflix ,
YouTube , HuluPlus , Pandora , and more with the Sony S580.
You can also turn your iPhone , iPad or compatible Android phone into a
versatile remote control with search functionality when you download
the free “Media remote”app.
I believe Sony S580 sold in tens and even hundreds of units, just in US alone. There are many great comment and feedback about this excellent and affordable Blu-ray. We compile some of the reviews from Amazon below to give you information before you purchase this Sony S580.
Review by : Kerry Derouen II – I
have primarily used this DVD player to stream netflix and it has
worked well. I did occasionally have network connection issues which
were solved by pressing the OK button once or twice. My N band wireless
router is about 30 feet away through two walls in another room. The
number of apps availible on this player is by far the most availible.
Those who are giving this player 1 star based on the fact that you cant
do 1080 through the Component outputs is preposterous. If you read
online, this is the case on all players made in the year 2011.(Or at
least it is illegal for the manufacturers to do otherwise.)
Here are the few quirks that I have with this player: (CONS)
Occasional network connectivity issues(I have NOT attempted to play with network settings). I am using the Linksys E3000 router with Cable internet. My streaming bandwidth peaks at almost 15 Mbps and was able to monitor my bandwidth from the player. I wateched the two seasons of Spartacus that are currently availible and they were great!
It is rather difficult to enter in letters for doing searches and things of that sort. You must hit the selection button 4 times on the remote to get to some of the letters. I wonder if i can use my wireless keyboard and mouse for this player.
You can only remove items from your netflix lists and may not search/add new movies to your queue.
PROS
Tons of APPS
Sony bravia interface
Fast loading Times
Great picture quality
I bought first one at best buy for $200 a week or two before it was availible on amazon. I may go ahead and purchases another one since amazon has it for about $160.

Review by: Megan Ellinger – I am probably an average user–not a techie but literate when it comes to technology.
I received the DVD player yesterday and setup was a breeze. We had an existing wireless network and it was easy to connect the DVD player. There was a bit of running back and forth to the computer to get/input activation codes from Sony and Netflix. I played around with some of the other streaming options and they all worked well. Amazon streaming is included on the DVD player though it isn’t listed in the specs above (it is advertised on the 570 but not this model for some reason).
I’m happy with this purchase and would consider it an excellent gift option for family.

– WOW, is all I can say how clear and nice for me DVDs and Blu-Rays
Player is Great! This is my first Blu-Ray Player for me, it’s works
great with my Sony TV, my Sony Stereo!! I think now I only buy Blu-Ray
Disc’s now, because they’re so clear and Great!
It also works great for my wireless Router, you can do a lot on this on Websites there!! Sony Blu Ray S580 Player is working Great and the fan in back is very quite!
Review by: E. Clark – My wife and I are addicted to Netflix streaming on our PS3 – so much so that we are considering getting rid of digital cable. I was considering getting a second PS3 but the price difference between it and other BR players (I don’t play video games, really) is really quite large.
The good: It has more bells and whistles than the PS3 as far as content. There are all kinds of other streaming video options available. It also starts and plays BR movies as fast as the PS3.
The bad: REALLY clunky interface. Coming from the smooth movements between menu selections on the PS3, I guess I am spoiled. Changing selections and working inside apps are choppy and slow. It is so bad that I think I may have a lemon. Also, Netflix is totally gimped in that you have to use a computer to select movies to watch by adding them to the instant queue…which is not sortable in the Sony S580 interface. It comes with a facebook web interface that is ridiculously slow.
I am gonna go to the Sony store and see if they will let me play around with one of their BR players to see if the experience is any different.
That’s about all I can think of right now. I’d highly recommend this Sony Blu ray S580. Lots of advanced features for a reasonable price.
